Being a widower has meant that I can sometimes feel lonely. Friendships and extended family aren’t always there for me and of course, I don’t want to feel as though I’m a burden.

A pretty lonely summer resulted in me confiding in a friend that I sometimes wished that I had a special someone to share the oncoming colder months with. He immediately suggested that I look at online dating.

I have to admit that I had always thought of online dating as something younger people did. It seemed an odd way to meet someone…a little cold perhaps?

My friend reassured me however that there were plenty of nice people looking to meet other older people who wanted to make new friends with a view to romance and that people listed their hobbies and interests so it would be easy to find someone that I’d get along with.

I decided to throw caution to the wind and just give it a go. And I am so glad that I did! My first ever date resulted in a lovely afternoon with someone that I had a lot in common with…we even knew some people in common from our schooldays!

That’s the positive thing about online dating…you can find people who live locally to you very easily and that means that you’ve got something in common right away!

We spent the day wandering around some antique markets…a shared interest…and then went out for an afternoon tea together. We went Dutch but when I asked her out for dinner the following week, I insisted it was to be my treat!

We’ve been on a number of lovely days out since then and continue to enjoy getting to know one another. I would suggest that anyone who feels unsure of online dating gives it a chance…it might result in a lovely friendship at the very least!
